What is Playful Pathways?

Playful Pathways (by Benson Behavioral Consulting) is a relationship-centered ABA program for children and families. We combine evidence-based behavioral support with naturalistic teaching, developmental understanding, and genuine respect for each child’s individuality.

Our services are organized around two distinct developmental stages:

  • A specialized and comprehensive early-intervention program for children ages 2–5

  • After-school ABA, groups, and parent coaching for children ages ~6 and older

Rather than using a one-size-fits-all model, we develop services around each child’s strengths, interests, needs, daily routines, and family priorities.

Our goal is not simply to teach isolated skills during therapy. We want children and families to develop practical tools they can use at home, at school, during play, in relationships, and throughout everyday life.

Explore the services we offer:

  • Our early-intervention program provides individualized, play-based ABA for young children ages 2–5.

    Sessions are built around play, movement, shared experiences, and familiar routines. By joining children in activities they find meaningful, we create natural opportunities to support communication, participation, flexibility, regulation, play, and growing independence.

    Depending on the child and family’s needs, services may include:

    • Individual play-based ABA sessions

    • Communication and functional language development

    • Early social engagement and shared play

    • Flexibility and coping with changes

    • Participation in routines and transitions

    • Emotional and behavioral regulation

    • Daily living and adaptive skills

    • Parent coaching and caregiver collaboration

    • Preschool or childcare consultation and support

    • Preparation for kindergarten

    Teaching is intentional, but it does not always look like traditional instruction. A session may include building, pretending, moving, talking, experimenting, laughing, pausing, solving a problem, and trying again.

    Underneath the play is careful observation, individualized goal development, responsive teaching, data collection, and ongoing clinical decision-making.

  • For school-age children ages ~6 and older, Playful Pathways offers support designed around the more complex demands of home, school, friendships, and community life.

    Services may be provided through individual after-school ABA, groups, parent coaching, or a combination of supports based on the child and family’s priorities.

    Potential areas of focus include:

    • Self-advocacy and communicating needs

    • Flexible thinking and problem-solving

    • Understanding social situations

    • Conversation and reciprocal interaction

    • Friendship skills and group participation

    • Emotional awareness and regulation

    • Planning, organization, and task completion

    • Coping with frustration, mistakes, and unexpected changes

    • Independence with home and school routines

    • Navigating boundaries and interpersonal challenges

    • Developing practical strategies for real-life situations

    School-age services are not intended to make children appear less different or simply teach them to comply. The goal is to help each child better understand themselves, communicate effectively, participate more successfully, and develop tools that support greater autonomy and confidence.

  • Our approach is evidence-based, naturalistic, developmentally informed, and family-centered.

    We begin by building safety, trust, and connection. From there, we create individualized learning opportunities through play, shared activities, everyday routines, and real-life situations.

    Our work is guided by several core beliefs:

    • Behavior is communication.

    • Play is meaningful learning.

    • Connection comes before correction.

    • Children should have meaningful ways to communicate preferences and needs.

    • Parents and caregivers are essential partners.

    • Goals should improve everyday life.

    • Support should be individualized rather than standardized.

    • Children deserve dignity, respect, and opportunities for autonomy.

    • Progress should carry beyond the therapy session.

    We use ABA principles to understand patterns, identify barriers, teach meaningful skills, and evaluate whether an intervention is helping. Strategies are adjusted according to the child’s response rather than applied rigidly.

  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based intervention aimed at modifying the environment and teaching a person meaningful skills to create socially-significant and value-based behavior change in their daily lives. Our services are holistic, child-centered, and family-focused.

    We offer support to children at home, in small group and in educational settings, as well as out in the community.

Hi there!

My name is Andrea Reinholz Benson and I have been in the special education field since 2007 and became a BCBA in 2015 (BCBA certification number is 1-14-9829).

I graduated from the University of Washington with my Master in Special Education. My professional work experience includes work as a paraprofessional in multiple school district's special education programs, and then after completion of my Master and teaching certificate, I worked as an inclusive preschool teacher at the Haring Center's Experimental Education Unit at the University of Washington. From there, I gained clinic experience coordinating and facilitating preschool and social skill groups until I passed the BCBA exam in 2015 and officially started my work as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

As a BCBA, I have supported children and families in-home, in the community, and in clinic-based settings. I have also partnered with schools to work as a behavior analyst to support individual children in their classrooms and provide educational consulting to school teams. I am a trained Positive Discipline Early Childhood Educator and use those philosophies to build strong relationships and meaningful learning progress with the families and children I work with.
